Meet the artist

My name is Karen and I live in Tobermory on the beautiful Isle of Mull, Scotland. I grew up in Edinburgh and moved to Mull in 2014. I am a self-taught
coloured pencil artist, inspired by the natural world around me. Being surrounded by dramatic coastlines, with ever-changing light and amazing Hebridean wildlife, I can’t help but find inspiration every day.

I specialise in realistic animal art, creating detailed wildlife drawings and bespoke pet portraits. My work is carefully hand-drawn using professional-coloured pencils on drafting film - an archival surface that allows me to build fine layers of colour and achieve exceptional depth, softness and intricate detail. Most drawings take over 20 hours to create.

Capturing personality is at the heart of what I do. Whether it's the soulful expression of a much-loved family pet or the quiet intensity of a wild animal, my aim is always to create artwork that feels alive.

Animals have always been an important part of my life. I share my home with my 2 crazy Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Eva & Poppy, who are a constant source of inspiration (and very patient models!). I am married to Andrew, who is my biggest supporter and constant encourager, and without this support I would never have had the confidence to become an artist. We are incredibly fortunate to live and work in such a special part of Scotland.

There is nothing quite like the unconditional love you get from a pet that becomes a valued member of the family. I understand the important role they play in people’s lives and like to focus on creating the perfect portrait, for owners to have a keepsake of their special friend.

As a dog owner, I appreciate what an integral role they play in people’s lives, I would be lost without Eva & Poppy. I love to work with clients who clearly adore their pets and want to work with me as an artist to create a portrait of their pet, that they can treasure for years to come.

I'm truly passionate about my art and the lovely animals I am asked to draw. I am always so thrilled to be able to create a treasured portrait of your pet that will bring you joy for years to come.
